Pruning Is More Than Cutting Branches

Every pruning cut changes a tree. Good pruning starts by understanding why a branch is being removed and how that decision may affect the tree years from now.

A tree’s species, age, structure, condition, location and surroundings all influence the pruning plan. The goal is not to remove the greatest amount of canopy possible. The goal is to accomplish a specific objective while retaining healthy, functional growth wherever practical.
Addressing developing structural concerns early can preserve future management options and may reduce the need for larger corrective cuts—or, in some cases, premature removal—later.

That objective may be developing better structure in a young tree, removing significant deadwood, shortening an overextended limb, creating reasonable clearance, or managing a particular structural concern.

Good pruning is not about cutting more. It is about making the right cuts for the right reasons.

A Thoughtful Approach to Tree Pruning

Evaluate the Tree

Before recommending pruning, we consider the tree’s species, age, condition, structure, location and surroundings to understand what actually needs to be addressed.

Establish the Objective

Every pruning job should begin with a reason. The objective may involve structure, deadwood, reduction, clearance, storm damage, or another specific concern.

Prune Conservatively

Remove what is needed to accomplish the objective while retaining healthy, functional canopy whenever practical. The appropriate amount of pruning depends on the individual tree and the work being performed.

Think Long Term

Good pruning considers more than how the tree looks today. We consider how today’s cuts may influence future branch growth, structure, clearance and maintenance needs.

Types of Tree Pruning

Tree pruning is not a one-size-fits-all service. Homeowners often use the term “tree trimming” for many different kinds of work, but professional pruning should begin with a specific objective.
A tree’s species, age, structure, condition, location and surroundings all help determine what type of pruning is appropriate. The goal is to accomplish that objective while retaining as much healthy, functional canopy as practical.
Every pruning cut should have a reason.

Structural Pruning

Structural pruning focuses on developing and maintaining a strong framework of branches as a tree grows.
For many large-growing shade trees, this includes encouraging a dominant leader and managing branches or upright stems that compete with it. Structural pruning may also address branch spacing, developing codominant stems and branches becoming disproportionately large in relation to the trunk.
Structural pruning is especially valuable while trees are young because developing problems can often be managed with relatively small cuts. Addressing structure early may reduce the need for much larger corrective cuts later in the tree’s life.
Young trees often provide the greatest opportunity to influence long-term structure.

Subordination Pruning

Some trees develop two or more upright stems of similar size that compete to become the dominant leader. These are commonly called codominant stems.
When one stem is selected as the preferred leader, the competing stem does not always need to be removed completely.
Subordination pruning uses reduction cuts to shorten the competing stem and slow its growth while retaining more foliage and growing points on the preferred leader. Over time, this encourages the preferred leader to become increasingly dominant.
Subordination is often performed progressively over multiple pruning cycles rather than trying to correct the entire structure in one visit.
This approach can be particularly useful when a competing stem has already become large enough that complete removal would create an unnecessarily large pruning wound.
Some codominant unions may develop included bark, which can reduce the strength of the attachment. How that structure should be managed depends on the individual tree, its age, condition, location and surrounding property.

Red maples are a common landscape tree that can develop competing upright leaders. Beginning structural pruning while the tree is young provides more options for managing those stems before they become large.
The goal of subordination is to manage a competing portion of the tree while encouraging a more desirable leader — not simply to make the entire tree smaller.

Deadwood Removal

Dead branches are a normal part of a tree’s life, but larger dead limbs can eventually break and fall.
Deadwood pruning selectively removes dead, broken or failed branches when their size, location or condition provides a reason for removal.
Around homes, driveways, sidewalks, play areas and other frequently used parts of a property, removing significant deadwood can reduce exposure to falling dead branches.
Deadwood removal can also improve the appearance of a mature tree and make the remaining live structure easier to evaluate without unnecessarily removing healthy foliage.

Reduction Pruning

Reduction pruning shortens a branch or stem by cutting it back to a suitable live lateral branch.
It can be used to manage the length, spread or mechanical loading of selected portions of a tree without indiscriminately cutting back the entire canopy.
Reduction may be appropriate for an overextended limb, a branch developing excessive end weight, a competing stem or another portion of the canopy that needs to be shortened for a specific reason.
The location of the reduction cut matters. A suitable lateral branch should remain to assume the terminal role and continue the branch’s growth.
Proper reduction pruning is very different from topping. Reduction follows the tree’s existing branch structure. Topping cuts branches at arbitrary locations and often leaves large stubs.
When a broader portion of the canopy requires this type of management, the work may be described as crown reduction.

Clearance Pruning

Clearance pruning addresses branches that conflict with homes, roofs, driveways, sidewalks, streets and other parts of the property.
The goal is not simply to cut everything back as far as possible. Good clearance pruning creates the space reasonably needed while considering how the remaining branches will continue to grow.
Repeatedly stripping branches from one side of a tree or making unnecessary large cuts can create new structural and appearance problems.
Whenever practical, clearance pruning should consider both the immediate need and the tree’s future growth.
Trees growing near energized utility conductors require special precautions. Work near electrical conductors may require appropriately qualified personnel and coordination with the utility provider.

Young-Tree & Developmental Pruning

Some of the most valuable pruning a tree will ever receive happens early in its life.
Young-tree pruning can help establish a desirable leader, improve branch spacing, manage competing upright stems and address developing structural concerns while branches are still relatively small.
A small corrective cut made today may prevent the same branch from requiring a much larger corrective cut years later.
Young trees should not automatically be stripped of lower branches or healthy foliage. Temporary branches and foliage can contribute to development while the trunk, canopy and root system become established.
The objective is to guide structure gradually as the tree grows.
Good young-tree pruning considers what the tree may look like 10, 20 or 30 years from now.

Mature-Tree Pruning

Mature trees require a different approach from young developing trees.
Large established trees often have structural characteristics that have developed over decades. Trying to dramatically reshape a mature tree during a single pruning can require unnecessarily large cuts and excessive loss of healthy canopy.
Mature-tree pruning should begin with clear objectives.
Appropriate work may include: deadwood removal, selective reduction, clearance, management of specific structural concerns, and other targeted pruning.
Larger pruning wounds expose more wood and generally take longer for new growth to close over than smaller wounds. For that reason, unnecessary large cuts should be avoided whenever practical.
Not every mature tree needs to be “thinned out.” Interior foliage and smaller branches are part of the functioning canopy and should not automatically be removed simply to make the tree look more open.

The Right Pruning for the Right Tree

The appropriate type of pruning depends on what we are trying to accomplish. Sometimes the best recommendation is structural pruning. Sometimes it is deadwood removal, reduction or clearance. And sometimes a tree may need very little pruning at all.

Our approach is to understand the tree first, establish a clear objective, and recommend work that makes sense for both the tree and the property.

Smaller Cuts

When the same pruning objective can be accomplished with a smaller cut, the smaller cut is generally preferable.
Smaller wounds expose less wood and can be closed over by new growth more quickly than large wounds. This is one reason structural pruning while trees are young can be so valuable — developing problems can often be addressed before the branches involved become large.

Why Proper Pruning Cuts Matter

Every pruning cut creates a wound in the tree.
Trees do not heal wounds the way people do. Instead, they compartmentalize injured tissue and produce new growth around the wound over time. Because of that, both the size of the cut and where the cut is made matter.
Good pruning avoids unnecessary injury, preserves important tissues around the branch attachment and accomplishes the pruning objective without removing more healthy canopy than necessary.
Good pruning is measured by whether the objective was accomplished — not by how large the pile of branches is when the job is finished.

Proper Cut Location

When removing a branch, the final cut should be made just outside the branch collar rather than cutting flush against the trunk or leaving a long stub.
The branch collar contains tissues associated with the tree’s natural response to the wound. Preserving that area helps the tree compartmentalize the injury and begin closing over the cut.
For larger branches, proper removal technique also helps prevent the weight of the branch from tearing bark below the cut.

Preserve Healthy Canopy

Leaves produce the energy a tree uses for growth and maintenance. Pruning should therefore remove enough foliage to accomplish the objective without unnecessarily stripping healthy canopy.
Not every interior branch needs to be removed, and a tree does not need to be “opened up” simply because the canopy appears dense.
Pruning should be based on a reason — structure, deadwood, reduction, clearance or another specific objective — rather than removing branches just to make the canopy look thinner.

When Should Trees Be Pruned?

There is no single best time to prune every tree. Timing depends on the species, condition of the tree, the pruning objective and how much work is needed.

Dormant-Season Pruning

For many deciduous shade trees, late winter is an excellent time for structural and corrective pruning. With the leaves off, branch structure is easier to evaluate, and pruning can be completed before the next major flush of spring growth.

A Special Consideration for Missouri Oaks

Oak trees require extra consideration when scheduling pruning in Missouri. Because of oak wilt risk, unnecessary pruning of healthy oaks should generally be avoided during the higher-risk period from approximately mid-March through mid-July.

Whenever practical, routine oak pruning should be scheduled outside this period. Storm damage or other urgent situations may require a different approach.

For Missouri oaks, timing is part of the pruning plan.

Dead, Broken & Storm-Damaged Branches

Safety concerns do not always follow the calendar. Dead, broken, hanging or storm-damaged branches may need attention when they are discovered, especially when they are above homes, driveways, sidewalks or other frequently used areas.

Species & Objective Matter

Young-tree structural pruning, mature-tree reduction, clearance work and deadwood removal do not always need to be scheduled the same way. The best timing should be based on the individual tree and what the pruning is intended to accomplish.

Topping vs. Proper Reduction

When a tree has become too large for a particular space, homeowners sometimes ask whether it can simply be “topped.” Topping and proper reduction pruning are very different approaches.

Proper Reduction Pruning

Reduction pruning shortens selected branches by cutting them back to suitable lateral branches.

The goal is to manage branch length, spread or loading while following the tree’s existing structure.

Proper reduction:
• Targets specific branches or portions of the canopy
• Uses suitable lateral branches as pruning points
• Retains a more natural branch structure
• Is performed to accomplish a specific pruning objective

Tree Topping

Topping cuts branches or stems back to arbitrary points without using suitable lateral branches.

Topping often leaves large stubs and can stimulate vigorous sprout growth near the pruning wounds. That new growth can create additional structural and maintenance concerns and may require repeated management over time.

Topping:
• Removes large portions of the canopy indiscriminately
• Leaves branches cut at arbitrary locations
• Often produces dense sprout growth
• Can create long-term maintenance and structural concerns

Can a Large Tree Be Made Smaller?

Sometimes, but the answer depends on the tree.

Selective reduction may be able to shorten particular limbs or portions of a canopy while maintaining reasonable tree structure. However, trying to dramatically reduce the overall size of a mature tree may require removing too much live canopy or making pruning cuts that are too large to be appropriate.

When a tree has significantly outgrown its location, the better long-term decision may involve selective management, continued monitoring or, in some situations, removal and replacement with a more appropriately sized tree.

The goal of reduction pruning is to manage the tree — not simply cut the top off.

Reasons to Consider Pruning

Dead, Broken, or Hanging Branches
Dead or damaged limbs may eventually fall, particularly when they are located above homes, driveways, sidewalks, play areas, or other frequently used parts of the property.

Competing Leaders & Codominant Stems
Young trees that develop two or more upright stems competing for dominance may benefit from structural or subordination pruning while those stems are still relatively small.

Overextended or Heavily Loaded Limbs
Branches that have become unusually long or carry excessive weight toward their ends may sometimes benefit from selective reduction pruning.

Branches Conflicting With Structures
Branches growing toward roofs, buildings, driveways, sidewalks, or other parts of the property may require thoughtful clearance pruning.

Storm Damage
Broken, split, hanging, or partially failed branches may require corrective pruning after severe weather.

Young-Tree Structural Concerns
Poor branch spacing, competing stems, or other developing structural concerns can often be managed more effectively while a tree is still young and pruning cuts can remain relatively small.

Rubbing or Crossing Branches
Branches that repeatedly rub against one another can damage bark and may indicate a structural issue worth evaluating. Crossing branches do not automatically require removal; the individual tree and pruning objective should guide the decision.

Does Your Tree Need Pruning?

Not every tree needs routine pruning. Good pruning begins with a reason.

Young trees may benefit from structural pruning as they develop, while mature trees often need more targeted work such as deadwood removal, reduction, clearance, or management of a specific structural concern.

Pruning Is Not the Answer to Every Problem

Some tree concerns cannot be corrected simply by removing branches.

Large cavities, extensive decay, major trunk defects, significant root problems, advanced decline, unusual movement, or compromised branch unions may require a broader evaluation of the tree rather than routine pruning.

Depending on the tree and the situation, an appropriate recommendation might include:

  • Monitoring
  • Selective pruning
  • Reduction pruning
  • Cabling or another support strategy
  • Tree removal
  • No immediate work at all

A dense-looking canopy by itself is not a reason to remove large amounts of foliage. Interior leaves and smaller branches are part of the functioning canopy, and pruning should not be performed simply to make every tree look more open.

The question is not “How much can we cut?” The better question is “What does this tree actually need?”

A thoughtful pruning recommendation considers the tree’s structure, condition, location, surroundings, and long-term management — not simply its appearance.

How much of a tree should be removed when pruning?
