Long before Mighty Oaks Tree Care was founded, owner Levi McCoy lived in Nixa, raised his family here for part of their childhood and spent years doing professional tree work throughout the area while working with Cherokee Tree Care.
Mighty Oaks is based in nearby Ozark today, but Nixa has never felt like a distant service area. It is a community our family has lived in, worked in and continued to stay connected to.

Nixa Has Grown—and Its Trees Tell Part of That Story
Nixa began as a small Ozarks crossroads and has grown into one of Southwest Missouri’s larger communities. That growth is visible not only in streets, homes and neighborhoods, but also in the different generations of trees growing throughout the city.
Some Nixa properties have mature trees that have shaped their yards for decades. Others are part of newer developments where young trees are still establishing roots and structure. Good tree care should recognize that those trees may need very different things.

City history traces Nixa’s unique name to local blacksmith Nicholas A. Inman. The community grew around the east–west and north–south crossroads that would become a lasting part of Nixa’s identity.
Nixa formally became a fourth-class Missouri city, marking another step in the community’s transition from small crossroads settlement to an incorporated city.

Growth Changes the Tree-Care Conversation
Nixa’s adopted 2045 planning documents anticipate continued growth and development, particularly toward the northeast, south and west portions of the city. Planning projections estimate roughly 9,000 to 11,000 additional residents between 2024 and 2045.
That does not mean every property will develop the same way. It does mean Nixa will continue to have a mix of established landscapes, developing neighborhoods and newly planted trees—making long-term tree planning increasingly important.

Good pruning starts before the first branch comes down. We look at the tree’s age, structure, branch attachments, dead or damaged wood, available growing space, clearance needs and the property around it before deciding what actually needs to be cut.
The goal is not to make every tree look alike or automatically ‘open up’ the middle of the canopy.
For a Nixa property, the objective might be removing dead or broken branches, addressing rubbing or competing growth, developing better structure in a younger tree, creating practical clearance, or selectively reducing a branch or portion of the crown while preserving the tree’s natural form.
More cutting is not automatically better. Mature trees often call for a lighter touch — purposeful cuts made for a specific reason while retaining useful interior growth and as much functional crown as the objective allows.

FIELD NOTE 01 — THINNING
Thinning is a specific pruning tool — not something every tree automatically needs. Excessive removal of interior foliage can create ‘lion-tailing,’ concentrating foliage toward branch ends and changing how those branches develop and respond to loading.

Timing matters. Missouri Department of Conservation guidance recommends avoiding unnecessary oak pruning from mid-March through June, when fresh wounds can increase exposure to oak wilt transmission.

Tree removal is not just about the tree. It is about everything around it.
Before deciding how a removal should be approached, we look at the tree’s size and visible condition, available space, roofs, fences, driveways, landscaping, neighboring property, access and how brush and wood can move through the site.
Where there is plenty of open space, the work may be relatively straightforward. In tighter Nixa yards, a tree may need to be dismantled in controlled sections. The approach changes with the tree and the property.
We also do not believe that “big,” “old,” or “close to the house” automatically means a tree has to come down. When pruning or a support system may better address the concern, that should be part of the conversation.

Current tree-risk practice looks beyond one visible characteristic. The important questions include what part of a tree might fail, what it could strike, the potential consequences and whether another practical management option could address the concern.
WHEN REMOVAL MAY MAKE SENSE
Removal may be appropriate when a tree is dead or dying, has sustained severe damage, presents structural or site concerns that cannot reasonably be managed another way, or when retaining the tree no longer fits the practical use of the property.
WHEN IT DESERVES ANOTHER LOOK
A large or mature tree does not automatically need to be removed. Depending on the actual concern, thoughtful pruning, a tree-support system or another property decision may sometimes provide a more appropriate path.

Managing storm-damaged trees is a balance of immediate cleanup and long-term planning. The goal is to address damage safely while determining which trees can reasonably be preserved.

HANGING + BROKEN LIMBS — Storm-damaged wood can remain partly attached, twisted or under load after the weather passes. Keep people and pets away from damaged canopy.
TENSIONED WOOD — Bent, twisted or partially attached limbs can move unexpectedly when cut. Do not treat storm-loaded wood like ordinary firewood.
POWER LINES — If a tree or limb is touching, pulling on or interfering with electrical lines, stay away. Mighty Oaks Tree Care does not perform utility-line clearance or 24/7 emergency response. Storm cleanup is not automatically tree removal. After the immediate situation is safe to approach, the next step depends on what failed and what remains.
01 — CLEAN UP. If the tree remains reasonably intact and the issue is material already down, cleanup may be all that is needed.

A damaged tree does not automatically need to be shortened aggressively or removed. University of Missouri Extension warns against topping storm-damaged trees because excessive canopy removal and poorly placed cuts can create additional problems. When pruning is appropriate, the goal is thoughtful removal of damaged material while retaining sound structure where reasonably possible.

Dynamic rope systems can provide supplemental support without drilling into the tree while allowing controlled natural movement between supported stems or limbs.

High-strength metal cable systems use drilled-in attachment hardware to provide more direct supplemental support when that approach fits the tree and support objective.
03 — TREE-SPECIFIC
The type, placement and configuration of a support system depend on the individual tree. No single cabling method is the right answer for every structural concern.

No. Supplemental support is appropriate only for selected trees and structural situations. Some concerns may be better addressed through pruning, removal, monitoring or another specialist.
DO YOU OFFER BOTH METAL AND DYNAMIC TREE CABLING?
Yes. Mighty Oaks offers high-strength metal cable systems that use drilled-in attachment hardware as well as non-invasive dynamic synthetic rope systems. Which approach makes sense depends on the tree and the support goal.
We do not currently offer brace rods or ground-anchored guy systems.
DOES TREE CABLING GUARANTEE THE TREE WON’T FAIL?
No. Supplemental support may help limit movement in selected situations, but it cannot eliminate every possibility of branch or tree failure.

A newly planted tree has not yet developed a broad root system in the surrounding soil. Early care should help the roots establish without creating unnecessary stress.
01 — WATER THE ROOT AREA
Newly planted trees need consistent moisture while establishing, especially during dry weather.
The goal is moist soil around the roots — not constantly saturated ground.
02 — DON’T OVER-PRUNE
Young trees usually do not need aggressive pruning immediately after planting.
Broken or damaged branches can be addressed, while future structural pruning can be considered as the tree establishes and develops.
03 — STAKE ONLY WHEN NEEDED
Not every newly planted tree needs staking.
When staking is necessary, it should provide temporary support while still allowing appropriate movement and should not simply be forgotten around the trunk.
PROTECT THE ROOT ZONE

A broad mulch ring can help conserve soil moisture, reduce competition from turf and help protect the trunk from mower or string-trimmer damage.

Drainage and soil behavior can differ from one property to the next around Nixa and the surrounding area.
That is why planting should respond to the actual ground at the property rather than treating every yard like the same soil profile.

No. Staking is used when the tree or site actually needs temporary support. It should not automatically become a permanent part of the tree.
SHOULD MULCH TOUCH THE TREE TRUNK?
No. Mulch can cover the surrounding root zone, but it should taper away from the trunk rather than being piled against the bark.

Mighty Oaks provides residential tree and shrub trimming and pruning, tree removal, scheduled storm-damage cleanup, tree cabling and support systems, tree and shrub planting, young-tree care and mulching.
If a job requires work outside our current scope, we would rather tell you that clearly than pretend otherwise.
DO YOU PROVIDE FREE TREE-SERVICE ESTIMATES IN NIXA?
Yes. Mighty Oaks provides free estimates and generally prefers to see the tree, access and surrounding property in person before recommending a scope or giving you a price.
HOW MUCH DOES TREE TRIMMING OR TREE REMOVAL COST IN NIXA?
There is no useful one-price-fits-all answer.
Tree size, location, access, nearby structures and other targets, rigging needs, cleanup and the exact scope of work can all affect pricing.
We prefer to look at the property first and then clearly define what is included in the estimate.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO PRUNE TREES IN NIXA, MISSOURI?
The best timing depends on the tree and the reason for pruning.
For many shade trees, dormant-season pruning is often a good time for planned live-branch pruning, while dead, broken or necessary corrective work may need to be addressed at other times.
We start with the pruning objective rather than choosing a date just because it is on the calendar.
DOES MIGHTY OAKS INSTALL TREE CABLING AND SUPPORT SYSTEMS?
Yes. Mighty Oaks offers high-strength metal cable systems using drilled-in attachment hardware as well as dynamic synthetic rope support systems.
Which system makes sense depends on the individual tree, its structure and the support objective.
A support system provides supplemental support; it does not eliminate every possibility of tree or branch failure.
IS MIGHTY OAKS TREE CARE ISA CERTIFIED?
Mighty Oaks is not currently ISA Certified, and we do not represent ourselves as a certified arborist company.
We are fully licensed and insured, bring years of hands-on tree-care experience to the work and continue studying and developing our arboriculture knowledge.
When a situation requires a formal tree-risk assessment or another service outside our scope, we will say so.
